31st Singapore International Film Festival – Opening Films

Tiong Bahru Social Club by Tan Bee Thiam and Newborn by Shoki Lin, will open activities for the 31st Singapore International Film Festival, which will run from November 26th until December 6th (2020). This year the festival will take place in cinemas and online.

About the festival:
The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is the largest and longest running film event in Singapore. Founded in 1987 by Geoffrey Malone and L. Leland Whitney, the Festival focuses on showcasing international films and providing a global platform for the best of Singapore cinema. Over the decades, it has grown to become an iconic date in the Singapore arts calendar. With its focus on groundbreaking Asian cinema, this prestigious event is known for its dynamic programming and commitment to the development of a vibrant local film culture.

The opening ceremony will take place on November 26th (Thursday) at 7 pm in the Shaw Theatres Lido (350 Orchard Rd, House, 5th/6th floor Shaw). Tickets will be available on November 6th, 12 pm. So be sure to check the SGIFF’s website for more updates.

South Asian Premiere

Ah Bee leaves his dull office job at a factory to join the Tiong Bahru Social Club—an exclusive data-driven pilot programme that aims to create the world’s happiest residents in the idyllic, pastel-hued neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru.

Employed as a happiness agent, Ah Bee is tasked with taking care of Ms Wee, a rebellious elderly resident who joined for the freebies. From looking for her cat to participating in group happiness exercises, it seems like the best job in the world. (SGIFF)

World Premiere

Pei Ling is forced to take on the full duties of caring for her newborn after her mother’s disappearance. Struggling with her identity as a young mother, she finds ways to cope with the burden of abandonment and single parenthood.
