We present a list of ten films you cannot miss Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival which will take place from July 9th – 15th, 2019 in Busan, South Korea.

Bori by Kim Jin-yu – South Korea | 2019 – 109 minutes

‘I want to lose my hearing.’ ‘Wanting to lose sound’ This is the concern of Bori, an 11-year-old girl living in a sea village. Bori is the only person in the family to hear. Why was I born differently from my family? The thoughts get deeper…

BulBul Can Sing by Rima Das – India | 2019 – 95 minutes

The film beautifully portrays miraculous moments in Bulbul’s oppressed life, a teenage girl living in India’s Assam region. The film depicts the power of pioneering a harsh life, close friendships and miraculous moments that look like fireworks in a surprising way. Bulbul’s desires to sing, love her peers, and fall in love are blocked by social demands and prejudices, and Sumu becomes ridiculed for violating gender boundaries. However, Bulbul and ger friends enjoy the fullness of life, wandering in the fields and the rivers.

Gods of Molenbeek by Reetta Huhtanen
Germany, Belgium, Finland | 2019 – 72 minutes

The district of Molenbeek in Brussels has reputation in media as a center of jihadism, but for six-year-old Aatos and his friend Amine, it is a familiar home. But the brutality of the adult world makes itself known when terrorists detonate a bomb in the neighborhood. Aatos envies Amine’s Muslim faith and looks for his own gods, although his classmate Flo questions him; she is strongly convinced that anyone who believes in God has gone crazy.

‘One Girl’ is a documentary feature where we follow for one day four young girls each living in a different country but awoken by the same dawn in the same time-zone: South Sudan, Romania, Palestine, Finland. Our girls are so different from one another and yet so similar in their behaviors, intentions, desires, and dreams.

PAHUNA-The Little Visitors by Paakhi A. Tyrewala – India | 2018 – 83 minutes

‘PAHUNA-The Little Visitors’ is a film about three Nepalese children who are separated from their parents while escaping to the Indian state of Sikkim. Despite the tales they have heard of children living on their own, they are determined to stay alive until they can be reunited with their parents. We follow their journey in the new land, surviving only on the kindness of the hill people and their resolve to protect each other.

Rafiki by Wanuri Kahiu – Kenya | 2018 – 82 minutes

Kena is a girl who hangs out with the local guys. One day, she meets Ziki and starts having special feelings toward her. Their relationship develops into love, but in a small town in Nairobi, there is no secret. They have to be even more cautious as their fathers are rival candidates in the parliamentary elections. In a village dominated by traditional values, the special relationship between the two girls is soon the topic on everyone’s tongue, eventually forcing them to break up. Time goes by and they meet again after achieving their dreams.

Stupid Young Heart by Selma Vilhunen
Netherlands, Sweden, Finland | 2018 – 102 minutes

Stupid Young Heart is a story about the first love of lightly built, carefree Lenni and gorgeous and popular Kira. Not yet even properly in a relationship, they discover that they are expecting a baby, and decide to keep it – partly as a statement to their families who have lost touch with what goes on in the teenager’s lives.

Summer Children by Guorún Ragnarsdóttir
Norway, Iceland | 2017 – 84 minutes

Eydis and Kari are only five and six years old when their parents’ marriage breaks apart. As their mother struggles to find her footing following the divorce, they are sent temporarily to a countryside children’s home. With days becoming weeks, their stay turns out to be longer than they had ever expected. With no hope in sight, Eydis and Kari plan their escape.
