15 Short Films you cannot miss at the 13th Film Festival for Women’s Rights

We present fifteen short films you shouldn’t miss at the 13th Film Festival for Women’s Rights which will take place from October 2nd – 6th at the CGV Arthouse Apgujeong, Seoul, Korea.

About the festival:
Film Festival for Women’s Rights (FIWOM), sponsored by Korea Women’s Hot Line, started in 2006 to show the reality and gravity of violence against women happening everyday and to spread support for the survival and healing of the victims. About 3,000 people attend the festival annually. The festival is comprised of a total of six sections: three fixed sections, two sections containing the theme of the year, and a competitive section consisting of domestic films.

FIWOM takes great interest in spreading movies about violence against women (including domestic violence and sexual violence), social structural problems that allow violence, and stories about brave women searching for their lives and human rights. In addition to covering sexual minorities, masculinity, aging, immigration, disability and overall human rights, we show movies dealing with violence against women from a multi-layered point of view.

Ajo (She) by More Raca – Kosovo | 2018 – 13 minutes

Zana’s family visits the hospital to treat mother hurt by domestic violence. Zana’s brother thinks that a family’s problem should stay within the family. Their mum has been patched up at the hospital, and the family starts the journey quietly. She’s told not to talk to the police. During the car journey to home, their father plans to marry off Zana to an unknown man in Germany. Now it’s up to Zana and her mum to make a brave decision.

Brother, move on by Antshi von Moos – Switzerland, India | 2018 – 9 minutes

Geeta is rare taxi drivers in India. Her taxi service “for women by women” enables women to move freely in the city at any time and means her motivation: “The more women become taxi drivers, the less women are afraid to step out of the house.”

Behind the hole by Shin Seo-young – Korea | 2019 – 25 minutes

Mr. Park is crazy for the illegal filming at the women’s toilet. One day he finds his hidden camera set in the toilet disappeared. After that, the matchup with a female intern, who has suffered from the illegal filming, begins.

Pyeongan is living in the domestic violence shelter with her daughter, Hoyeon, and son, Taeung. One day, Pyeongan’s husband visits to her with a rabbit.

In the run-up to the final exam, Sun-ah (18, female), a high school sophomore, was forced to attend a ritual at a rural maternal house due to her mother’s request. Sun-ah noticed that she left the notes for the exam in the house. She asked her friend to lend the notes for the exam, but she doesn’t. Sun-ah tries to look at it secretly and return it, when her friend is not looking at the note.

Proxy Exam by Kim Nakyung – Korea | 2019 – 18 minutes

Daughter of a North Korean defector, Hyun-joo is a stateless. Without an ID, she can’t go to school nor do anything ordinary that a teenager would do. Being unable to even attend her favorite idol’s fan meeting, Hyun-joo decides to borrow Joo-hee’s identity in exchange for taking a proxy exam.
