Tina by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin – USA | 2020 – 119 minutes

Tina Turner. She is a multi-platinum musician, one of Rolling Stone’s ‘100 Great Artists’ and the Queen of Rock and Roll who also has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Nevertheless, she has long been remembered as sexually and economically exploited by her ex-husband and a musical partner, Ike Turner. In 1981, three years after a divorce, she revealed in an interview with People magazine that she was abused by her ex-husband. Director Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, the winner of the Academy Award 2012, earned the motif of the film from this interview. It sheds light on the shadow behind the musically successful ‘Ike-Tina’ duo in the 1960s and 1970s, but it doesn’t fall into a cliché documentary about the abuse. Instead, as the title of the film TINA suggests, the film persuasively depicts a great female artist who has rediscovered herself thoroughly through her own voice and experience and has rewritten her own history. She was 45 years old when she sang her hit song, Private Dancer” in front of tens of thousands of audiences at a huge stadium. This song gave her back with the title queen of Rock, when the rock music was exclusively enjoyed by young people. And that’s why she calls this song her debut song, not a comeback song. In this film, we encounter heroism of a female pop star who has overcome a hard life and found herself. (MAENG Soojin – JIMFF 2021)
