The organizers of the Jeonju International Film Festival announced that Piranhas (La paranza dei bambini) by Claudio Giovannesi will be the Opening Film.

Ten teenagers including Nicola expand their power by assisting adult drug dealers. The boys ran through the alleys of Naples with their new scooters and purchased guns to encroach on the adult’s business. Now as a new big shot, Nicola bought furniture for his mother and fell in love with a girl. The gang stopped collecting protection money and earned respect from people. Expanding their boundaries, they had conflicts with other districts and started having an internal strife. Nicola’s little brother and his friends, who admired older boys, took to the streets with guns. Based on the novel of the same title by Roberto Saviano, known for Gomorrah, the film skillfully captures wild teens in a classical visual style. Emerging Italian director Claudio Giovannesi depicts the dark side of growth in a noir style by intersecting light and darkness and capturing different parts of Naples. Piranhas was invited to the competition at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Screenplay award.
