9th Seoul Guro International Kids Film Festival – Awards 2021

We present the list of winners of the 9th Seoul Guro International Kids Film Festival which took place from July 1st – 7th 2021, in Korea.

About the festival:
The principal objective of Seoul Guro International Kids Film Festival (GUKIFF) is to present the most outstanding films for children, youth, and families produced in all over the world. Established in 2013, GUKIFF is striving to encourage young generations who will lead the film industry and support them to get various opportunities. GUKIFF realized the importance of culture that all the family members can share. GUKIFF wants to introduce various genres of domestic and foreign films dealing with children, family, and dream themes.

Father, Please Find Mary by Oh Woo-ram – Korea | 2020 – 40 minutes

A faithful Christian, Won-jae commits a sin to satisfy his beloved daughter’s desire, and the boomerang of the master becomes a blade and is hooked in front of his wife, daughter, and the church people who believed in him.

Unpredictable Boy by Goong Yu-jeong – Korea | 2019 – 30 minutes

Myung Hyun, an elementary school teacher, finds out that one of her students, Chang Jin, still has not paid for an after-school program. When she confronts him, he tells her he left the money on her desk. However, the money is nowhere to be found.

Yuan Yuan for Heading South – USA | 2020 – 13 minutes

8-year-old girl Chasuna travels from her home in the grasslands to visit her father, who lives in the big city. However, during her father’s birthday party, Chasuna finds out he has remarried to a Chinese woman. Chasuna has to learn how to accept her as part of the family.

Kim Yong-cheon for Goodbye Bushman – Korea | 2019 – 22 minutes

During a boring summer vacation, young brothers play “Bushman” in the mountain after watching a video with the same name. One day, the younger brother finds a strange man and plays “Bushman” with him.

Mojtaba Rostami Far for Messi – Iran | 2021 – 14 minutes

A little boy makes a living by scavenging wishes to be someone like Messi in order to fulfill his sister’s dream. One night, when his sister asks him to get a pizza, something bad happens to them.

Kim Da-li for Because of Hanna – Korea | 2021 – 24 minutes

Strange rumors are circulating that five-year-old Hannah is slow to talk and that she’s doing weird things in her class because she is half Vietnamese. Her homeroom teacher Yoo-young lies to protect Hannah.

Giolina Ardente for Mira (dir. Roni Zorina) – Germany | 2021 – 16 minutes

Mira adores her father. She is constantly striving for his attention. While he is busy saving the world, she has to take care of her little sister. However, Mira would rather spend her time outside skateboarding, without responsibilities—like any other child her age.

Kim Min-young of the Report Card by Lee Jae-eun, Lim Ji-sun – Korea | 2021 – 94 minutes

20-year-old Jung-hee doesn’t go to college and works part-time. She goes to meet Min-young, her old high school roommate, for the first time in a while and wants to play with her as before. However, Min-young, a college student, is busy sending correction emails regarding her credits and feels uncomfortable by Jung-hee’s visit.

Four first-year middle school students are members of a photography club. Before leaving for summer break, the teacher hands out an old-fashioned analog camera to each of them and asks them to take pictures with them as a summer assignment. The assignment topic is “the end of the world.” They all have different opinions on it, but as one of the girls suggests, they decide to take a subway to Sinchang Station, the last stop on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1.

12-year-old Seon-yu and her mother struggle to make a new start after her father kills himself, leaving behind enormous debt. In her new school, Seon-yu regains her smile thanks to her reckless but innocent classmate Jung-gook. However, Seon-yu’s grandmother abruptly appears in the school claiming a share on her dead son’s insurance money. Now Seon-yu’s secret is revealed before everyone. In the meantime, Seon-yu’s mother slowly loses her will to live and proposes a suspicious journey to Seon-yu…

Son Young-joo for Ninteeen (dir. Woo Kyenghee) – Korea | 2021 – 87 minutes

It was one day after summer vacation, in 2008. Sojeong, a senior high school student, lives with her sick mother, but dreams to live alone and be a musician though the reality is frustrating. Just listening to music on MP3 and writing down the lyrics of the songs she wrote on her mini-homepage is Sojeong’s only escape.

Mu-won always studies to become a civil servant as his parents tell him to. One day, his friends propose to their teacher to hold a dodgeball competition, and Mu-won, who only studies, comes into conflict with his friends little by little. Meanwhile, the dodgeball competition is canceled due to complaints from parents, and the kids become furious.

Be Free by Hugo Gehr – Spain | 2019 – 6 minutes

Samuel and Miguel enjoy an exhibition until they see Jorge, a classmate who bullies Samuel. They try to hide from him but they do not succeed. Lucas, a child who has seen everything, helps them in an unexpected way.
