20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival (Part 1)

These are twenty short films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival, which will take place from November 26th until December 4th (2020) in Seoul, South Korea.

About the festival:
The SIFF (Seoul Independent Film Festival) is a domestic competition festival encompassing varied independent films of the year. Regardless of theme, format and genre, the films are contested and awarded. Through the festival, SIFF ends the year with the discovery of new independent films as well as the introduction of diverse trends in the invitation sections.

After the Rain by Song Hyeon-ju – Korea | 2020 – 22 minutes

Damage by Kim Sung-hwan – Korea | 2019 – 29 minutes

Jung-tae is an on-site construction worker in his old age. It starts to rain at dawn, and Jung-tae starts drinking, knowing that it won’t work. But soon the rain stops and the day dawns. The team leader calls to come out and work, and Jung-tae refuses to do so, but finally begins to take his drunken body to the scene. Taxis are rarely caught and it is difficult to use public transportation that is not usually taken. The process is not smooth with the cold eyes and misunderstandings around him. (SIFF 2020)

We see a scene from a typical romance film when suddenly, a horrendous error occurs. We find out that the scene is a part of a film in editing. As the mysterious error keeps recurring, the director panics and calls a professional editor for help. The duo struggles to mend the errors one by one, but in the end, the director’s conviction is what matters the most. (SIFF 2020)

There is a U.S. military base near. The place cannot be seen. In the AR, there are infantries just like me. They are wandering around the symbols of violence with no passages or fences. The film starts with staring the mirage of U.S. and U.S. military which relies on self-fulfilling prophecy. Then it gazes covertness about rise and fall of a place. As the silent ascension of birds shows the air current, some omens can overtake visible things. (SIFF 2020)

Despite Jina’s efforts to look resilient in her situation, she is met with the reality of looking for thrown away workbooks near academies to continue her studies. One day, Yoon-Jung goes over to Jina’s house. Not even having ramen to eat, Jina is about to boil three eggs when her drunken father stumbles into the home. Even though Jina hopes to avoid the situation, her father reveals her weaknesses after all. (SIFF 2020)
