20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival (Part 1)

These are twenty short films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival, which will take place from November 26th until December 4th (2020) in Seoul, South Korea.

About the festival:
The SIFF (Seoul Independent Film Festival) is a domestic competition festival encompassing varied independent films of the year. Regardless of theme, format and genre, the films are contested and awarded. Through the festival, SIFF ends the year with the discovery of new independent films as well as the introduction of diverse trends in the invitation sections.

**After the Rain** by Song Hyeon-ju – Korea | 2020 – 22 minutes

Min-jo and Young-hwan are a happily engaged couple. But the video of a drunk Young-hwan peeing on the subway goes viral on the internet just before their wedding. (SIFF 2020)

**Can’t Stop** by Oh Woo-ri – Korea | 2020 – 19 minutes

As a sole witness of the theft, Yubin secretly finds it amusing when Yerim, the most popular girl, loses her laptop. Yubin approaches Gayoung, the culprit, and volunteers to help her out. (SIFF 2020)

**Damage** by Kim Sung-hwan – Korea | 2019 – 29 minutes

Jung-tae is an on-site construction worker in his old age. It starts to rain at dawn, and Jung-tae starts drinking, knowing that it won’t work. But soon the rain stops and the day dawns. The team leader calls to come out and work, and Jung-tae refuses to do so, but finally begins to take his drunken body to the scene. Taxis are rarely caught and it is difficult to use public transportation that is not usually taken. The process is not smooth with the cold eyes and misunderstandings around him. (SIFF 2020)

**Digital Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro: The Real-World Guide to Set Up and Workflow** by Hong Seong-yoon – Korea | 2020 – 40 minutes

We see a scene from a typical romance film when suddenly, a horrendous error occurs. We find out that the scene is a part of a film in editing. As the mysterious error keeps recurring, the director panics and calls a professional editor for help. The duo struggles to mend the errors one by one, but in the end, the director’s conviction is what matters the most. (SIFF 2020)

**Farewell Trip** by Park Surin – Korea | 2020 – 27 minutes

Juyeon has to go her father’s 60th birthday party in Chuncheon with her awkward aunt Seyoung. Their trip is marred by a burst of pent-up emotions. (SIFF 2020)

**Graeae: A Stationed Idea** by Jeong Yeoreum – Korea | 2020 – 33 minutes

There is a U.S. military base near. The place cannot be seen. In the AR, there are infantries just like me. They are wandering around the symbols of violence with no passages or fences. The film starts with staring the mirage of U.S. and U.S. military which relies on self-fulfilling prophecy. Then it gazes covertness about rise and fall of a place. As the silent ascension of birds shows the air current, some omens can overtake visible things. (SIFF 2020)

**House of Heeji** by Lee Hyo-jung – Korea | 2020 – 30 minutes

Heeji loves her best friend Eunseo. Eunseo wants to live with Heeji. Heeji wants to know if Eunseo’s mind is the same as her mind. (SIFF 2020)

**Living Under** by Kim Yu-jin – Korea | 2020 – 27 minutes

While trying to escape poverty Jina is receiving free tutoring by Yoon-Jung’s older brother. Despite Jina’s efforts to look resilient in her situation, she is met with the reality of looking for thrown away workbooks near academies to continue her studies. One day, Yoon-Jung goes over to Jina’s house. Not even having ramen to eat, Jina is about to boil three eggs when her drunken father stumbles into the home. Even though Jina hopes to avoid the situation, her father reveals her weaknesses after all. (SIFF 2020)

**Our Summer Poem** by Youn Hyein – Korea | 2020 – 23 minutes

Dajung, beloved by teachers and classmates, hides her dream to become an author. One day, Dajung meets a new girl – Seo-jung, who has won an award at a writing competition in which Dajung had no success. As she gets to know more and more about Seo-jung, Dajung has mixed feelings of admiration, jealousy, and self-doubt. A school writing competition is coming up. Dajung longs for Seo-jung’s world. (SIFF 2020)

**Quitting my destiny** by Chang Hyung-yun – Korea | 2020 – 25 minutes

During the Goryeo and Early Joseon dynasty, warriors fought with the sword. Even though it may seem like true warriors don’t exist anymore, they are actually hidden everywhere. There is the last successor of Jinsa style, his name is JIN YOUNG YOUNG. At the age of 20, JIN YOUNG YOUNG gets tired of living in hiding and decides to enter college. (SIFF 2020)
