15 Feature films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival

These are fifteen feature films you shouldn’t miss at the 46th Seoul Independent Film Festival which will take place from November 26th until December 4th (2020) at the CGV Apgujeong Art House & CGV Apgujeong Cinema in Seoul, Korea.

About the festival:
SIFF(Seoul Independent Film Festival) is a domestic competition festival encompassing varied independent films of the year. Regardless of theme, format and genre, the films are contested and awarded. Through the festival, SIFF ends the year with the discovery of new independent films as well as the introduction of diverse trends in the invitation sections.

**Beyond You** by Park Hong-min – Korea | 2020 – 119 minutes

Kyung-ho meets his first love In-sook in 20 years and Ji-yeon, her daughter. After their encounter, strange things happen to Kyung-ho. Facing the past continuously, Kyung-ho realizes that he’s locked in his own memories. “Why is this happening to me?” To find the answer, he decides to walk into In-sook’s memories with Ji-yeon. Meanwhile, an ant is crawling around in Kyung-ho’s room. (SIFF 2020)

**Black Light** by Bae Jong-dae – Korea | 2020 – 106 minutes

The driver who is suspected of being the perpetrator of a traffic accident on the central line dies, and the driver who is believed to be the victim falls into a coma. After some time, the harmer’s wife Hee-ju returns. Hee-ju is embarrassed to learn that the victim’s wife, Young-nam, works with her at the factory where she works. (SIFF 2020)

**Comfort** by Lee Hyerin – Korea | 2020 – 66 minutes

Known as “Yankee Princess” and “UN Madame,” women who were sexual laborers for the US military Camptowns, filed a lawsuit against Korean government and called themselves “US Military Comfort Women.” Chasing forgotten voices and erased traces, this film tells you a story about comfort women system in Korea, which have lasted since World War II. (SIFF 2020)

**Dust-Man** by Kim Na-kyung – Korea | 2020 – 92 minutes

Taysan, a young homeless man in dust-riddled Seoul, begins a series of illustrations over dusty surfaces. Through his Dust Art, Taysan starts the process of recovery from the pains of his past. (SIFF 2020)

**Fighter** by Jero Yun – Korea | 2020 – 103 minutes

After a few months of social adjustment training, the North Korean refugee Jina moves to a small flat in Seoul and starts her new life. To bring her father to South Korea, she needs money but no matter how hard she works, the discrimination doesn’t let her save enough money. One day the broker introduces her to a boxing gym cleaning job. Seeing young and confident female boxers, Jina feels something burning inside. (SIFF 2020)

**Girl with the camera** by Ahn Hee-su – Korea | 2020 – 69 minutes

The purpose of this project is for the young adults in their twenties to ponder upon the ambiguity and duality that may arise in the word “image.” We are about to hear the stories of individuals who are witnessing and embracing the discrepancy between “myself in my eyes” and “myself in others’ eyes” through a process of multiple photoshoots. (SIFF 2020)

**Going to School** by Kim Jeong-in – Korea | 2020 – 99 minutes

Gongjin Elementary School in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, was shut down due to the dramatic decrease of the number of students. At the end of 2013, the Education Office of Seoul started a project to establish a special-education school, Seojin School, tentatively. But even after about 5 years, its construction hasn’t started yet. Could Seojin School open with all the obstacles? (SIFF 2020)

**Hunger** by Kang Da-yeon – Korea | 2020 – 68 minutes

The world is divided into Building Cities and Hachon due to the gap between the rich and the poor. Yuji, 16-year-old, who lives in a Building City, does not understand parents who insist on building houses even though their houses are leaning. Yuji, who has had the same daily routine as usual, faces a tornado that will wipe out the Building City and the Hachon. (SIFF 2020)

**Limecrime** by Lee Seung-hwan, Yoo Jae-wook – Korea | 2020 – 83 minutes

Song-ju is a boy who lives in a tenement and loves hip-hop. Hip-hop singer E SENS has always been his hero. With his like-minded friend Joo-yeon, who lives in a wealthy apartment, they form a hip-hop team called LIMECRIME. The two boys dream of being on stage of Millim, a sacred place for hip-hop, thus decide to go to the same high school to rap together. But environmental differences begin to separate their paths. **Made in Rooftop** by Kim Jho Gwang-soo – Korea | 2020 – 85 minutes

Ha-neul (27), a job seeker who has nowhere to go after breaking up with his lover, Jung-min (33), moves to the house of his best friend Bong-sik (27), who lives in a tiny room. Bong-sik working as a BJ with a high tension + one-person broadcasting concept is courted by Min-ho (27), an attractive straight-forward man, but somehow just hesitates. Haneul and Jungmin try to reconcile, but they only go against each other and unintentionally hurt each other. One day, Jung-min is in a car accident and Han-eul has to bring back Ari, the cat they used to raise together. (SIFF 2020)

**Men Who Won’t Pick Up Guns 2: Breaking A Taboo** by Kim Hwan-tae
Korea | 2020 – 101 minutes

Seventeen years have passed. That is since I made Men Who Won’t Pick Up Guns. I’ve documented the conscientious objectors in Korea since 2002. I’ve been together with them through a dark and harsh decade during the conservative government and all the way to the moment when in 2018 the Constitutional Court ruled the introduction of alternative civilian service. Their still but perseverant walk proved their own existence and rang the bell throughout our society. Now you trace the peaceful path of the Korean conscientious objection movement, and walk into the times when the movement breaking a taboo. (SIFF 2020)

**Short Vacation** by Kwon Min-pyo and Seo Hansol – Korea | 2020 – 79 minutes

Four first-grade middle school students are members of a photography club. Before leaving for summer break, the teacher hands out an old-fashioned analog camera to each of them and asks them to take pictures with them as a summer assignment. The assignment topic is the “end of the world.” They all have different opinions on it, but as one of the girls suggests, they decide to take a subway to Sinchang Station, the last station on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1. **Snowball** by Lee Woo-jung – Korea | 2020 – 111 minutes

To 18-year-old Kang-yi, her friends So-young and Ah-ram are everything. Wanting to go somewhere foreign, she runs away from home with them, only to find a strange side of themselves and the balance of their friendship also tips in a weird way. Although they left home as one, but they eventually return home as three. Kang-yi wants nothing more than going back to how they were but that’s easier said than done. (SIFF 2020)

**Ten Months** by Namkoong Sun – Korea | 2020 – 96 minutes

Mirae, a twentysomething programmer, feels hung over one day. To her horror, she finds out that the hangover is actually her pregnancy sickness. Denial, panic and mixed messages from friends, family and the law sends Mirae into a frenzy of ambivalence. But time does not spare her to sort out her mind. Suddenly, Mirae is in the middle of a strange new world. (SIFF 2020)

**Visitors** by Choi Kyuk-jin – Korea | 2020 – 72 minutes

Min-seok, who has just returned to Korea from Australia, gets to know his father left for Thailand with his stepmother. He is going to stay at his late grandmother’s house for a while. Su-ho, who is the son of Min-seok’s stepmother and has just been discharged from the navy, also needs a place to stay. In this way, they get together unintentionally and not as comfortably in a rustic rural place. (SIFF 2020)
