20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 20th Kaohsiung Film Festival (Part 2)

We continue with our list of short films you shouldn’t miss at the 20th Kaohsiung Film Festival which will take place from October 16th until November 1st, 2020 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

About the festival:
The Kaohsiung Film Festival is a film festival held annually in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Established in 2001, the festival screens both locally produced and international films, in all genres and lengths. The festival also has an international competition section where it hands out awards for outstanding short films

**Home Sick** by Sun Chieh-Heng – Taiwan | 2019 – 25 minutes
**Section**: Taiwan Competition

A seasoned captain, a chief engineer who is retiring soon, an experienced Filipino worker who speaks a bit of Taiwanese and English, and an unskilled Indonesian. Everyone on the deep-sea fishing ship has his own purpose and longing.

**In this land we’re briefly ghosts** by Lo Chen-Wen – Taiwan, Myanmar, US | 2019 -16 minutes | **Section**: Taiwan Competition

Myanmar, 2013. A 12-year-old Burmese child soldier, imprisoned for desertion, is forced to either kill her older brother, a fellow deserter, or die alongside him. Based on actual events.

A seed is planted. A school of fishes washes up to a barren land. While all the fish leaps into the sea, one digs deep into the land.

**Like Father, Like Daughter** by Leong Siew-Hong – Taiwan | 2019 – 21 minutes

Wen-de is hounded by local women trying to introduce a marriage partner to his daughter. On the day Taiwan passes its same-sex marriage law, his daughter is celebrating her new engagement to her girlfriend. How will Wen-de face the challenge?

Doudou, a fifth-grade kid, is indignant when his Dad vents frustration on him after his divorce. One day, Doudou meets a cyber friend named “men killer” on an app, which makes him embark on his project of making his Dad disappear.

Amid the hubbub of the New Year’s Eve firework display, three youngsters of different backgrounds become roommates in the juvenile detention house. However, they soon come to realize that they could never leave the place for good.

The 40-year-old pregnant Ha is going to fight her husband’s secret lover tomorrow. Her supporters? A bunch of gossipy neighbors, the Buddhist mom, two grown up daughters, and her unborn baby son.

The old grandpa has passed away. The Indonesia caregiver, Shally, helps to hold the funeral with grandma and uncle. However, none of the children come home. Under such circumstances, Shally is forced to be one of the family members.

**We Should be Glad today** by Independent Press and Citizen Journalists from Hong Kong – Hong Kong | 2020 – 25 minutes | **Section**: People Power: Hong Kong Generation

It was the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC in 2019. The struggles and sufferings of Hongkongers was in sharp contrast to the festive atmosphere in the Mainland. Journalists record how Hong Kong people celebrated National Day in their own way.
