After Spring , the Tamaki Family… by Huang Yin-Yu – Taiwan, Japan | 2016 – 96 min.

In 2015, Grandma Tamayo and her family, an immigrant family on Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa, go back to Taiwan, where they lived before the WWII. These Taiwanese have been swinging in different countries and regimes for sixty years and are now living in Japanese society. It’s a tale of the forgotten people in the history of East Asia.

City of Jade by Midi Z – Taiwan | 2016 – 98 min.

In the war-torn Kachin State in Myanmar, waves of poor workers flock to dig for jade, dreaming of getting rich overnight. The director, Midi Z, is the protagonist’s youngest brother. Midi tries to find out why his brother became a drug addict and abandoned his family. Moreover, the film depicts how people struggle for survival in the darkest corners in Myanmar.

In 1991, four years after the martial law was lifted in Taiwan, four young people were arrested by the Bureau of Investigation. This incident evoked memories of the “White Terror” and triggered huge demonstrations in the country. Through in-depth interviews and researches, The Last Insurrection reconstructs the Taiwan Independent Association (TIA) Incident in 1991.

The Taiwanese indigenous people are those who truly experienced the changes in the process. Through the life of a Truku elderly, we see the history of aboriginal recertification movement.

The taste of apple by Kevin H.J. Lee – Taiwan | 2015 – 119 min.

In addition to deconstructing the development of Next Media in Taiwan, The Taste of Apple reflects the abnormal development of Taiwanese media and the casual adoption of self-censorship in the face of China and self-interests. When Taiwan’s freedom of the press must rely on a Hong Kong-based media group criticized as “sensationalist” for its defense, we are truly witnessing the greatest ironies.
