These are ten short films you shouldn’t miss at the 28th Women Make Waves Film Festival which will take place from October 15th – 24th, 2021 at the Spot Huashan cinema (No. 1, Section 1, Bade Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei)

**8teen** by Shao Lin – Taiwan | 2021 – 28 minutes

With the absence of his parents and his drunken grandfather, Jay’s dream of a life far away from the village begins to fade. One day, a beautiful girl from the big city enters Jay’s life… (WMW 2021).

**A Trip to Heaven** by Duong Linh – Vietnam | 2020 – 15 minutes

Fifty-year-old Madam TAM joins a peculiar bus tour to the Mekong Delta with a friend. On the trip, she bumps into her high school sweetheart. She’s hopeful for a chance of reconciliation, but maybe he’s not (WMW 2021).

**B. Selvi & Daughters** by Drishya – India | 2020 – 25 minutes

Selvi, a 50-year old woman, has taken back her hobby of selling sarees after her husband’s death. She is struggling with the confidence to build it into a real business while her daughter’s idea of an online shop seems too idealistic. Is she capable of handling a business on her own? (WMW 2021)

**Born, Unborn, and Born Again** by Jeon Kyuri – South Korea | 2020 – 13 minutes

The film revolves around JEON’s struggle to embody the White Horse, a Chinese zodiac sign which occurs every 60-year cycle. With the abortion debate’s entanglement with misogynic myths and the introduction of modern technologies, an untold history resurfaces in the present, and re-orients us towards the future (WMW 2021).

**Girl in the water** by Huang Shi-Rou – Taiwan | 2021 – 7 minutes

Gazing at the wall cancer and the scar, the woman recalls her past love. The film depicts femininity and female internal time-consciousness through a broken heart’s healing. The story is based on the director’s personal experiences (WMW 2021).

**Homeless** by Dai Wei – Taiwan | 2021 – 27 minutes

A lost girl is looking for a place to stay. When a child who has a desire for survival meets an old man who scavenges for waste, they look for a home together, just like a dream that happened in the blink of an eye (WMW 2021).

**Judy Free** by Che Tagyamon – Philippines, Singapore | 2019 – 20 minutes

Judy’s reality is intruded when her migrant worker father comes home as an animated doodle figure after working abroad. She struggles dealing with the new king-like presence in the household. Her plan to get close to him is put in jeopardy when a commotion happens (WMW 2021).

**Lemongrass Girl** by Pom Bunsermvicha – Thailand | 2021 – 18 minutes

According to Thai superstition, a virgin can ward off rain by planting lemongrass upside-down underneath an open sky. A young production manager on a film set is tasked to carry out this tradition. She has no choice but to take on the burden of becoming the lemongrass girl (WMW 2021).

**My Grandmother is an egg** by Chang Wu-Ching – Taiwan | 2021 – 8 minutes

Eggs are fragile but meanwhile tough. My grandmother is an egg. My grandmother was a T’ung-yang-hsi. It is a traditional practice of pre-arranged marriage, selling young girls to another family to be raised as future daughters-in-law. The film aims to reflect the oppression of women (WMW 2021).

**Usay** by Usay Masiru – Taiwan | 2020 – 37 minutes

Usay is an Amis name meaning lovers. Chih-Yuan is a Han-Chinese name meaning wisdom and harmony. The connection between Taoyuan-Saowac and Hualien-Matalin tribe is also a dialogue between Chih-Yuan and Usay. This path of seeking out Usay and settling Chih-Yuan requires courage and is a necessary journey to take (WMW 2021).
