These are thirty short films you shouldn’t miss at the Kaohsiung Film Festival which will take place from October 14 – 30, 2022.

Anxious Body by Mizushiri Yoriko – France, Japan | 2021 – 6 minutes

Living things, artificial things, geometric shapes, and lines. When these different things come together, a new direction is born. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Asphyxia by Chuang Shiang-an – Taiwan | 2021 – 22 minutes

During a burglary, a woman asks for help from her estranged husband, who ends up accidentally killing the thief. Overnight, the husband becomes a hero in the eyes of the public, even though he could also be responsible for involuntarily manslaughter. Was his violence to protect or to harm? As she ponders their past and future, painful old wounds are reopened… (Kaohsiung 2022)

Can you hear me? by Li Nien-hsiu – Taiwan | 2021 – 25 minutes

Jhong wakes up at home and finds himself dead. He watches his wife and children deal with his death as they speak their thoughts over breakfast. Shortly after, absurd things begin to happen: Jhong’s spirit starts nagging beside his own corpse, but no one can hear him; his son is afraid his mother will be charged with manslaughter; the policeman who comes to help is terrified upon seeing Jhong’s ghost; and Jhong’s wife insists on taking her husband’s corpse for a walk by the riverbank. Duet by Su Pei-yi – Taiwan | 2022 – 25 minutes

As her mother suffers through the final stages of terminal pancreatic cancer, cello teacher Chung Yi spends her days commuting back and forth between music lessons and hospital visits. One day, in the absence of a caretaker, Chung Yi is left to change her mother’s diaper and clean up her excrement. Tensions explode in a perfect storm of inner panic as the mother grapples with a loss of dignity in front of her daughter, while Chung Yi searches for the strength to provide for her dying mother’s needs. Her and I by Chen Shao-chun – Taiwan | 2021 – 18 minutes

Her and I is a story about an adolescent girl’s mistake in the pursuit of love. She eventually realizes her decision will cost her everything she thought she had. Through witnessing the birth of a newborn child, she sees what it is that she lacks. (Kaohsiung 2022)

It’s Raining Frogs Outside by Maria Estela Paiso – Philippines | 2021 – 14 minutes

The world is about to end. Maya is forced to go home to the province of Zambales. There, she confronts the childhood house that terrorized her as frogs rain outside. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Left Handed by Nasrin Mohammadpour – Iran, | 2022 – 15 minutes

Maryam is a 38-year-old woman who heads a family of four. She decides to cut off her right hand while working in a poultry slaughterhouse because, in this way, she can get more money from insurance than losing her left hand to pay her debts. To this end, Maryam starts to practice with her left hand to do daily chores. However, on the appointed day, when she intends to amputate her right hand, the machine suddenly jams, and Maryam’s left hand is accidentally amputated instead of her right hand. Therefore, a new fate determines for her. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Love Letters by Darren Lin – Taiwan |2022 – 25 minutes

Captured and imprisoned by the government, LIU Yao-ting is forcefully separated from his wife, SHIH Yueh-hsia. During this time, they write to keep their love alive. Eighty-one letters, lipstick-smudged and sweat-stained, are the vessel for their passion and the embodiment of their spirits. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Makassar is a City for Football Fans by Khozy Rizal – Indonesia, France | 2021 – 20 minutes

In a city where men have to go crazy about football, Akbar has to pretend to love the game in order to prevent rejection from his new college friends. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Me and Me by Chen Chiu-ling – Taiwan | 2022 – 9 minutes

One woman and one black cat share a city life together. This life is pleasant and relaxed sometimes, while sad and lonely at other times. The protagonist feels every minute detail in life, and senses the warmth and glitter of life in the briefest of moments. This film takes inspiration from classic French cinema. The director captures the lights and shades of a city and the feeling of solitude with black and white sketches and colorful pastels. The film aspires to be a poem, a brisk song, and a gift to every “one” living alone in cities. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Murder Tongue by Ali Sohail Jaura – Pakistan | 2022 – 18 minutes

It is May of 1992. The state sanctioned “Operation” has put the city of Karachi in constant unrest. Abdul Aziz Ansari wakes up at night and is informed by his daughter in law, Naseema, that his son hasn’t returned home. As a knock on their door later at night summons them to the hospital. What they witness along the way is known today as the most brutal chapter of the city’s history, a sentiment of hatred towards their race, deep rooted beneath the system. (Kaohsiung 2022)

My Zombie Grandpa by Qian Ning – Taiwan | 2022 – 19 minutes

Grandpa escaped from the nursing home! But when his daughter and grandson go looking for him, they encounter old people who have turned into zombies! How will the guilt-ridden boy face his zombie grandpa when his treacherous journey of zombie escape is intertwined with memories of his grandfather’s illness and how they abandoned him? (Kaohsiung 2022)

NATASHA by Galilee Ma – Taiwan | 2022 – 23 minutes

A mysterious woman kidnaps a sex doll, Natasha, from a brothel. They embark on a journey full of difficulties. She has no choice but to finish this mission, no matter what it takes. (Kaohsiung 2022)

Oh So Convenient by Red Hung Huei-jen – Taiwan, Estonia | 2022 – 5 minutes

A man who has a unique way of using toilet paper after pooping. A couple who always orders delivery because they don’t like to put on clothes. A family that has a way to avoid washing dishes. A woman who likes her table to be sparkly clean. People use bags for every little thing, a convenience of life we enjoy every day. Too much waste? No problem, just flush them all down the toilet! (Kaohsiung 2022)

Party Poster by Rishi Chandna – India | 2021 – 20 minutes

In suburban Mumbai, science, religion and politics comically collide amidst a raging pandemic, when a group of laundrymen set out to design a poster celebrating a hugely popular annual festival worshipping the deity Ganesha. (Kaohsiung 2022)
