We continue with our list of short films that you shouldn’t miss at the 18th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival, which will take place from August 11 – 16, 2022 in the city of Jecheon, South Korea.

Korean GENOCIDE by Chon Seung-il – Korea | 2021 – 19 minutes
Section: Dynamic Shorts

Geumjeonggul in Goyang City, South Korea, was built for the purpose of mining gold during the Japanese colonial period and was closed. In October 1950, during the Korean War, in Geumjeonggul, the police massacred hundreds of residents of Goyang without any legal procedures and buried them deep in layers. And 71 years later, the bereaved families are still suffering and struggling with trauma. (JIMFF 2022)

Lumière by Bok Woonsuk – Korea | 2021 – 14 minutes
Section: Official Korean Competition

Ga-young, who is blind, is learning to live by herself after her father passed away. Then one day, she hears the news that the theater where his father worked as a projectionist will be gone, and so, she visits the theater. As Ga-young heads to the projection room only by following the sound and scent, she reunites with her father in the projection room, which was the biggest universe to her. (JIMFF 2022)

Pyrrha by Park Jihyeon – Korea | 2021 – 18 minutes

Pandora thought there would be no other choice when it came to opening the box. Pyrrha, on the other hand, found the box itself to be beautiful and captivating. A box is given to Pyrrha as the apocalypse draws near, and Pyrrha has to make a choice now. (JIMFF 2022)

That Girl and I by Lim Jinhee – Korea | 2021 – 17 minutes

Haeon writes songs for her band. She uses her grandmother’s poem for a song and wins an audition for a TV show. On the same day, she realized the poem plagiarized another song’s lyrics. (JIMFF 2022)

The Mountains Sing by Yang Xiao – China | 2021 – 40 minutes
Section: Dynamic Shorts

The Hawfwen, a traditional gathering where the Zhuang people sing folk songs, is losing its popularity. It often takes place around the clan temples or under the old village trees, where singers are divided into male and female groups, who improvise their lyrics to sing in correspondence with one another. While attempting to trace the broken echo of the Hawfwen, the camera travels along with the antiphonal singing of Zhuang people across the mountains and cities and encounters a fascinating diversity of singers and gatherings. The Second Language by Kim Eunseo – Korea | 2022 – 21 minutes

Yeonghwa and Myungjin, studying Korean traditional music at the university, suffer from the death of their best friend Yuna. The Yeonghwa tries to share the sadness with Myungjin, but Myungjin keeps avoiding speaking about Yuna’s death, and their relationship starts to creak. (JIMFF 2022)

“Unnie” is a Korean word used by females for addressing an elder sister. Yeon is a free spirit basking in music and smoking. When her little sister Daon comes her way with bruises all over, Yeon must face what she had tried to look away from. (JIMFF 2022)

Wonderful Tonight by Kim Youngjo – Korea | 2022 – 19 minutes
Section: Official Korean Competititon

On the 1st of February, 2021, Myanmar’s Military launched air strikes against the Karen minority group. The news reminds K of his time in Karyn State 4 years back. K thinks of General Neda who wanted to build a community for Karen refugees, Khun from Thailand and the village children who helped him. He promised to fight for peace when General Neda sang “Wonderful Tonight” for him. Reminded of his forgotten promise, K roams the street aimlessly. Still, time eats away at his memories. (JIMFF 2022)
