What happens when a battleground becomes an amusement park, and a restricted military zone becomes a wildlife sanctuary? More than a half-century long division between North and South Korea has unintentionally created a vast wilderness inside a sensitive, high-security military space. The Korean DMZ is a military buffer zone between North and South Korea into which humans can’t venture. This inhuman landscape, as deadly and forbidding as it is beautiful, has evolved into a sublime fetish. But the area surrounding this long-frozen battlefront has been radically altered by tourism, turning it into a half-silly and bizarre military amusement park. It exists in the space between reality and fantasy, a mirage of the mind, a vantage point for viewing the “other,” its ideological meaning bent under the relentless pressure of money and curiosity. The Korean DMZ military tourism leads us to a new ideological wonderland. (PIPFF 2022)
