10 Films you shouldn’t miss at the 4th PyeongChang International Peace Film Festival

These are ten feature films you shouldn’t miss at the 4th PyeongChang International Peace Film Festival which will take place from June 23 – 28, 2022 in Chuncheon-si, South Korea.

**A Home from Home** by Lee Seunghwan – Korea | 2021 – 96 minutes | World Premiere
**Section**: International Feature Competition

Do-yoon is about to leave the orphanage when he legally becomes an adult. Instead, he is reunited with his father Seung-won, who appears after 15 years to take him home. Do-yoon adjusts to the newfound family that also includes Jae-min, a little brother. Seung-won’s sudden death makes Do-yoon the legal guardian, and he comes across something strange in his late father’s records while trying to claim insurance money. More shocking evidence is found at the orphanage, and Do-yoon feels all the more confused about his identity as he gets nearer to the truth. (PIPFF 2022)

**Balaban** by Aysulu Onaran – Kazakhstan | 2021 – 101 minutes | Asian Premiere

A 16-year-old, Ardak, can only imagine the feeling of desire and emotions of her first teenage love. Diagnosed with HIV as a child though and living a sheltered life with her mother in a plush house, she dreams of moving to Paris and becoming the next big thing in couture. But she meets Zhanna to put her plans into motion at a local charity for HIV adolescents. Before long, their youthful friendship will yield to an arduous, yet ardent romance. Undoubtedly, first love can be difficult, but to truly liberate themselves, they must take valorous action and be determined to overcome the danger awaiting them. (PIPFF 2022)

**Cats’ Apartment** by Jeong Jae-eun – Korea | 2020 – 88 minutes

In eastern Seoul, an apartment complex is soon to be demolished. The residents wanted new homes and left without hesitation when the reconstruction plan was passed. The abandoned complex belonged to cats for a short time. There was only peace and quiet. Meanwhile, residents worried about the cats that remain there gather together and seek ways to keep them happy. (PIPFF 2022)

**Faceless** by Jennifer Ngo – Hong Kong, USA | 2021 – 83 minutes

A daughter who loves her police officer father; a believer who advocates nonviolent resistance; a student entering his last year of high school and queer artist-activist: their lives are upended as protests against a controversial extradition bill engulf Hong Kong. Faceless follows these four young people navigating the protests. They take to the streets, facing tactical problems and countering police brutality. As protests morph into a greater city-wide movement calling for democracy and justice against police brutality, each of them are forced to re-examine their motives, their values and personal relationships. Navalny follows Russia’s former opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, in the wake of his August 2020 Novichok poisoning as he aggressively works to uncover who was behind his assassination attempt in this gripping documentary thriller. (PIPFF 2022)

Gwangho, a prospect on his high school baseball team, is not drafted by a professional baseball team. His desire to continue playing baseball strains his relationship with his team members. Gwangho eventually begins selling fake gasoline with his friend Mincheol. (PIPFF 2022)

**Soup and Ideology** by Yang Yong-hi – Japan, Korea | 2021 – 118 minutes

One day, the mother tells her daughter that she experienced the Jeju 4.3 uprising especially how she got involved in the uprising and the reason she escaped to Japan. In 2018, after 70 years from the massacre, the daughter and her fiancé take the mother to Jeju Island although the mother starts to lose her memories because of Alzheimer. (PIPFF 2022)

**The Apple Day** by Mahmoud Ghaffari – Iran | 2022 – 81 minutes | Korean Premiere

A first-grade primary school teacher in a poor suburb of Tehran assigns a letter to each student and asks them to bring items starting with an assigned letter, related to their fathers’ jobs. Mehdi’s father is a fruit seller and he must bring 30 apples (“Seeb” in Farsi) to class on the “S” Day. However, an unfortunate event immerses the family in a crisis. Saeed, Mehdi’s older brother, should find a way to overcome this challenge and help Mehdi for “the apple day”. (PIPFF 2022)
