15 Films you shouldn’t miss at the 10th Seoul International Children’s Film Festival

These are fifteen feature films you shouldn’t miss at the Seoul International Children’s Film Festival (Korea) which will take place from June 15 – 22, 2022.

Asteroid by Mehdi Hoseinivand Aalipour – Iran | 2021 – 77 minutes

Ebrahim is twelve. He lives with his mother and five siblings of all ages in a two-roomed shack in the heart of desert, far away from the village. Aside from feeding the children and obtaining a birth certificate for them, the main preoccupation of Ebrahim and his mother is to build a house in the village so they don’t have to walk all the way back and forth all the time… (SICFF 2022)

Becoming Astrid by Pernille Fischer Christensen – Sweden | 2018 – 124 minutes

Astrid LINDGREN is shown growing up with her parents, a brother and two sisters in the countryside near Vimmerby Sweden on their farm, from age 16 up: going to church, attending dances, helping on the farm. She is offered an internship with the local newspaper after they published her essay. She has an affair with the unhappily married and older newspaper editor. Discrimination by Kim Ji-woon, Kim Do-hee – Korea | 2021 – 88 minutes

Japan’s policy of free high school implemented in 2013. However, only 10 Korean high schools are excluded from this policy. The reason is that there is a suspicion that the free subsidies will be misappropriated by the Chongryon(General Association of Korean Residents in Japan) and others.  Five Korean high schools that protested this claim a compensation suit against the state in 2013. After four years of hearing, the first trial will be decided, starting with Hiroshima  Korean high school on July 19, 2017. Discrimination’ is the story of a two-year lawsuit process from the first trial ruling in the Osaka Korean high school lawsuit in July 2017 to a high school free lawsuit at Kyushu Korean high school in April 2019, and the struggle of Korean-Japanese,  Korean school students, and lawyers who have been guarding Korean School for more than 70 years. Kanku also wants to believe that her father is a ‘Superhero’. The film is about Kanku’s struggle to prove that her father is a Superhero. (SICFF 2022)

Sewing Sisters by Lee Hyuk-rae, Kim Jung-young – Korea | 2020 – 110 minutes

At Pyonghwa Market in the 1970s, there were the girls often called, “shida,” or “gongsuni,” meaning the girls working at garment factories using the sewing machines instead of attending schools only because they were girls or from poor families. They attended the night classes with their own dreams. There, they called their names each other, sung, and dreamed together.
