We present a list of twelve films you shouldn’t miss at the 9th Cambodia International Film Festival which will take place from March 9th – 14th, 2019 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

A Land Imagined by Siew Hua Yeo – Singapore, France, Netherlands | 2018 – 96 min.

A lonely construction worker from China goes missing at a Singapore land reclamation site, and a sleepless police investigator must put himself in the mind of the migrant to uncover the truth beneath all that sand.

In Rithy Panh’s latest exploration of the lasting effects of the Cambodian genocide, a 13-year-old boy who loses most of his family begins a search for their graves.

In the life of music by Caylee So & Visal Sok – USA, Cambodia | 2018 – 92 min.

In the Life of Music is a powerful intergenerational tale that explores love, war, and a family’s relationship to: ‘Champa Battambang,’ made famous by Sinn Sisamouth (The King of Cambodian Music). Exploring three different decades, it depicts the lives of people whose world is inevitably transformed by the emergence of the Khmer Rouge Regime.

Memories of my Body by Garin Nugroho – Indonesia | 2018 – 105 min.

In Center Java Juno, a pre-teen abandoned by his father, joins a Lengger dance centre where men assume feminine appearances but the political and social upheaval in Indonesia forces him on the road, meeting remarkable people on his journey.

Nakorn Sawan by Puangsoi Aksornsawang – Thailand | 2018 – 77 min.

Aoey seeks the Pak Nam Po River believed to reach heaven in order to send her mother, who recently passed away, to the afterworld. Early in the morning, she boards a boat and embarks on her journey with her father, other family members, and an old friend who is now a monk.

Season of the Devil by Lav Diaz – Philippines | 2018 – 234 min.

An anti-musical musical, a rock opera, that delves into mythology. Screening of Lav Diaz Award winning film in the exceptional presence of lead actress Shaina Magdayo.
