28 Short Films you cannot miss at the 14th Sapporo International Short Film Festival and Market (Part 1)

We present a list of twenty-eight short films you cannot miss at the 14th Sapporo International Short Film Festival and Market, which is taking place from October 17th until November 4th in Sapporo, Japan.

About the festival:
The Sapporo International Short Film Festival continues to attract between 2800 and 3500 entries per year across all genres cementing its reputation as one of Japan and Asia`s largest and most respected showcases of short form cinema. The festival offers one of the best opportunities available for filmmakers looking to expose their creative works to large audiences and to submit for appraisal by high profile international jury members in the heart of the burgeoning Asian transnational film scene.

Since its inception in 2006, the festival has received more than 35,000 entries from 141 countries and boasts an average annual festival audience of more than 10,000 film enthusiasts. The high volume of entries each year allows for the curation of an extensive and diverse array of programs of both Japanese and International films of the highest quality in various competitive categories. Selected films are professionally showcased, subtitled in Japanese, and screened in state-of-the-art cinema surrounds.

Undefiable, fragile, yet strong bond between a single homeless woman and abandoned gifted boy. Through their peculiar relationship, the film looks into what “family” and “love” mean.

Danchi Woman by Akiko Sugimoto – Japan | 2019 – 28 minutes

85 years old and never married, Shizu has spent the past 3 decades living in one “Danchi” – the Japanese word for public housing. When the danchi is scheduled for demolition, Shizu and neighbors must say goodbye to their homes.

An Exploration to the North. Hokkaido, Japan. In 2018, I traveled around Hokkaido, following the footsteps of Takeshiro Matsuura, the godfather of Hokkaido, with a drone in one hand.

Pickle Plum Parade by Eri Sasaki – Japan | 2019 – 4 minutes

The dog barks there. Oh, if you think it’s a cat, it‘s a plastic bag. The uncle was laughing somehow. I know a lot about this city, but I don’t know much about it.
