These are eight films you shouldn’t miss at the 18th Skip City International D-Cinema Festival which will take place online from September 25th – October 3rd, 2021.

Battlecry by Yanakaya – Japan | 2021 – 75 minutes
Section: Japanese Film Competition – World Premiere

A fictitious 1980s Japan. Soji, a soldier on furlough, returns to his country. He receives a request from Haya, who was sent from the World Bank, to help her on a mission to investigate the actual circumstances of a narcotic called “Golden Monkey” which is running rampant through Japanese society. Headstrong Kenza lives together with her strict policeman father, and her grandfather who honors the traditions and mysticism of Curaçao. While her diametrically opposite father and grandfather butt heads, Kenza gradually becomes fascinated by the tranquil and mystical island’s traditions advocated by her grandfather. (Skip City 2021)

Bunsaku and Konosuke used to work together. However, after the suicide of Konosuke’s childhood friend Natsume, the two go their separate ways. Then, a parcel addressed to Konosuke arrives from Tsugusawa who was the cameraman on Natsume’s film. (Skip City 2021)

Struggling event MC Kyung-man has a younger sister and an ill father. One day, his father passes away, and a funeral service is held. But Kyung-man is unable to pay the funeral expenses, so he sneaks out and accepts a job emceeing the birthday party of an old woman living in a rural town. (Skip City 2021)

Section: International Competition – Japan Premiere

9-year-old Roman travels from Ukraine to Germany where his mother works illegally as the nurse of Gert, a widower suffering from diabetes. Gert tries to get along with Roman, but Roman cannot accept the closeness between Gert and his mother. (Skip City 2021)

This Rain Will Never Stop by Alina Gorlova – Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, Qatar | 2020 – 102 minutes

The Suleyman family escaped the Syrian civil war and were scattered throughout different European countries. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Red Cross volunteer, Andriy, goes into Ukraine only to find conflict there as well. (Skip City 2021)
