20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 11th Seattle Asian American Film Festival (Part 1)

These are twenty short feature films you shouldn’t miss at the Seattle Asian American Film Festival which will take place in-person from February 23 – 26, and online from February 27 until March 5, 2023.

A Guitar in the Bucket by Boyoung Kim – Korea | 2021 – 15 minutes

In a world where everything can be rented from vending machines, a girl wants to be a guitarist, but people choose otherwise for her. (SAAFF 2023)

After the death of her reclusive father, Aria ventures deep into the woods to clear out his cabin, when she encounters a supernatural presence. (SAAFF 2023)

Set in the Philippines during World War II, a young woman struggles to find purpose after losing her father. Based on the true story of a young Filipino beauty queen who became a resistance commander during World War II. (SAAFF 2023)

Haunted by wet dreams on her newly bought mattress every night, a Chinese girl goes on a journey of spiritual cleansing with the help of the spirits from her Chinese heritage. (SAAFF 2023)

Crossroads by Sarita Khurana – USA | 2022 – 14 minutes

In the aftermath of the FedEx mass shooting in Indianapolis, the Sikh community grieves the loss of four of its members, while navigating the investigation into what happened and why this took place. CROSSROADS is the story of a community responding to an act of violence, and their right to be safe and treated equally, as Sikhs living in America. (SAAFF 2023)

Fabula by Sam Kumiko Sheridan – USA | 2022 – 12 minutes

Amid anti-Asian hate crimes rising, Langyue takes a vow of silence while working for a maid service in New York City. However, after meeting a strange client that uses a camel puppet to communicate, she is forced to reflect on her choice to ignore her problems and run away. (SAAFF 2023)

Flowing Home by Sandra Desmazières – Canada | 2021 – 15 minutes

Two sisters in their teens are separated by the war between North and South in Vietnam. Though they had hoped to be reunited sooner, their separation lasts nearly 20 years. The letters they exchange are the only way to connect with each other, relieve their loneliness, and flow back home. (SAAFF 2023)

Gem & Shaz by Chloé Hung – Canada | 2022 – 10 minutes

Two Asian Canadian teenage girls are given one hour at the school dance by their strict immigrant parents and are determined to make the most of it. (SAAFF 2023)

Georgia by Jayil Pak – Korea | 2020 – 30 minutes

When the police refuse to investigate their daughter’s alleged suicide, two computer-illiterate parents decide to design a protest banner. Based on the infamous Miryang case in South Korea which shocked the nation in 2004 and continues to fuel public outrage even today. (SAAFF 2023)

Heading South by Yuan Yuan – USA | 2020 – 13 minutes

Eight-year-old Chasuna travels from her grassland home to visit her father who lives in the big city. However, during her father’s birthday party, she finds out he is married to a Chinese woman. Chasuna has to learn how to accept her as part of the family. (SAAFF 2023)
