40th Miami Film Festival – Asian Presence 2023

We present the Asian films that will be screened at the Miami Film Festival which will take place from March 3 – 12, 2023 in Miami, USA.

Joyland by Saim Sadiq – Pakistan, USA | 2022 – 126 minutes

As the Ranas—a happily patriarchal joint family—yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line, their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story slowly illuminates the entire Rana family’s desire for a sexual rebellion. (MiamiFF 2023)

Plan 75 by Chie Hayakawa – Japan, France, Philippines | 2022 – 105 minutes

In Japan, government program Plan 75encourages senior citizens to be voluntarily euthanized to remedy a super-aged society. An elderly woman whose means of survival are vanishing, a pragmatic Plan 75 salesman, and a young Filipino laborer face choices of life and death. (MiamiFF 2023)

Riceboy Sleeps by Anthony Shim – Canada | 2022 – 117 minutes

Set in the 90s, a Korean single mother raises her young son in the suburbs of Canada determined to provide a better life for him than the one she left behind, but their relationship becomes fractured over time as they struggle with various racial and cultural challenges. (MiamiFF 2023)

Busan, 1999 by Thomas Percy Kim – USA | 2021 – 11 minutes

A pregnant Korean-American woman returns to Korea and her mother. They bathe and scrub each other, hoping to heal past wounds. (MiamiFF 2023)

Loveboat Takeout by Melanie Wu – USA | 2022 – 12 minutes

Loveboat Takeout is an experimental docu-fiction short about the director’s family business endeavor of opening a Chinese restaurant in Miami, FL. The immigrant population comprises half of the Miami population, most being Latin American. There’s an overall consensus in the city that the labor of immigrants is essential, however, there’s less recognition of the Asian population’s entrepreneurial endeavors. Overall, the film is a celebration of the Asian diaspora and opens up a dialogue about labor and diversity in Miami. (MiamiFF 2023)
