
The Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival (Hong Kong) is accepting projects for short films for the Local Competition until January 30, 2023. * Applicant must be a Hong Kong permanent resident *
About the festival:
“Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival” (hereinafter as “Fresh Wave”) aims to promote and encourage local short film production, and to discover and nurture young talents by providing funding support and a platform for showcasing their works, while enhancing their technical skills and the film’s quality through trainings.
Requirement of the Competition
– Entrants will be required to produce a short fiction film of 10 to 30 minutes for the Competition during the period from July 2023 to January 2024. The film produced for the Competition must be an original production during the period of the Competition. No graduation project or school assignment is allowed.
– The FWFFL will provide production subsidy (maximum at HKD100,000) to each Entrant who shall be responsible for any excess expenditure required to complete the film produced for the Competition. The production subsidy will be paid by instalments. Entrants are required to submit all production receipts to the FWFFL to ensure that the subsidy is properly spent. Any unspent subsidy must be returned to the FWFFL.
– Entrants have to attend the activities of the 18th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival, including briefing sessions, workshops, the Press Conference, the Opening Ceremony, the Closing and Awards Presentation Ceremony and sharing sessions after each screening, etc. Details will be announced in due course.
– If Entrants fail to submit the films produced for the Competition to the FWFFL on time, he /she will be disqualified from participating in the Competition, screenings and all related activities. The FWFFL has the right to request the Entrants to return all production subsidies
Eligibility:
– Applicant must be a Hong Kong permanent resident, who have the right of abode or the right to land or to remain in Hong Kong without restriction, i.e. the letter “A”, “R” or “U” should appear below the date of birth on the HKID card.
– Each application can be submitted by no more than two applicants, both of them must fulfil the following requirements and provide their own information for consideration
– Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 as at the deadline of submitting the application.
– Education background is not a consideration.
– Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival aims at providing a platform for young filmmakers who are yet to join the professional fields to make short films. Hence, those who have served as key creative personnel (i.e., director, scriptwriter or cinematographer) in a commercially released feature film (including works on online channels) cannot participate in the Competition.
– An applicant who has been shortlisted to enter the Competition must be the director for the application, and shall form his / her own team, in which the scriptwriter and cinematographer must be Hong Kong permanent residents aged 18 to 35 years old
– The applicant cannot participate in the Competition as the same key creative personnel (i.e. director, screenwriter and cinematographer) in 2 consecutive years.
– The applicant cannot participate in the Competition as the same creative personnel (i.e., director, scriptwriter and cinematographer) for more than 2 times.
– Each person can submit only one application.
– Materials Required for Application
Applicants may submit the application form with required materials via online platform, mail or in person.

* Complete the online application form, including:
– Curriculum vitae;
– Softcopy of the HKID card in JPEG or PNG format;
– Softcopy of a recent passport photo in JPEG or PNG format (in the past one year);
– Experience in filmmaking;
– Relevant local or overseas awards received (if any);
– A viewing link of a previous work;
– Production Proposal (The proposed work must be original): Film Title (Tentative), Logline (No more than 50 words), Synopsis (No more than 600 words) and Treatment (No more than 800 words); and – pay a non-refundable application fee of HKD200 through PayMe, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Paypal or by credit card.
Submission by post / in person
Submit both hardcopy and softcopy (DVD/USB) of the completed application form, including:
– Curriculum vitae;
– A copy of HKID card (softcopy in JPEG or PNG format);
– A recent passport photo (in the past one year, softcopy in JPEG or PNG format);
– Experience in filmmaking;
– Relevant local or overseas awards received (if any);
– A viewing link of a previous work;
– Production Proposal (The proposed work must be original): Film Title (Tentative), Logline (No more than 50 words), Synopsis (No more than 600 words) and Treatment (No more than 800 words); and
– Pay a non-refundable application fee of HKD200 with a crossed cheque (Payee Name: Fresh Wave Film Festival Limited, with applicant’s name in bilingual, contact number and HKID number written at the back).
The previous work submitted for the First Round Selection MUST fulfil the following requirements:
a. Please upload your previous work to online streaming channel or sharing space (e.g YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive) and provide the download / viewing link in the application form;
b. The submitted previous work should be a completed production of a fiction short film or feature film in full-length or an excerpt (If your previous work is over 10 minutes, please edit and submit the edited excerpt within 10 minutes for viewing);
c. The applicant MUST be the director of the film;
d. Name of applicant MUST be shown in open or end credits to verify he / she directs the film;
e. The submitted work MUST be produced on or after 1st January 2020; and f. If the work submitted does not fulfil the above requirements, the application will not be processed.
Selection of projects
– Tentatively no more than 20 applicants will be selected for the Competition to receive at maximum a production subsidy of HKD100,000, based on the following criteria:
a. relevant experience of the Applicant in filmmaking;
b. idea of the content and treatment of the proposed work; and
c. artistic merits of the previous work.
– Application Fee: HKD 200 Non-refundable
Important Dates:
* Deadline: January 30, 2023 (6:00 pm Hong Kong Time)
* Submission of detailed script (for selected applicants) – April to May 2023
* Interview (for selected applicants) – May 2023
* Results on the Entrants of the Competition – June or July 2023
* Production Period – July 2023 to January 2024
* 18th Fresh Wave – June 2024
